Description
Original digital manipulation of hand painting by Cheryle LL Gannaway (Morghaine's Faeries)
This piece uses my original painting, "Child of Night", as the starting point. Then I made the mirror image of the piece to create the whole face. Interestingly, you can see a human figure has appeared in the background/head-dress of the owl. I'd love to say that this was intentional, but it was just a magical accident! For real raptor enthusiasts, you can now print the right and left eye separately and create your own really big pillow owl!

For this piece, I hope to convey the feeling that the owl is being painted into existence (or I guess dissolving into the night). I love the eye and periocular region of animals because it is so expressive...in an animal kind of way. The feathers, beak, and eye are painted by hand using squeeze bottles of high profile fabric paint. There are no stencils or pre-existing patterns used; it's all "free-hand". The pupil itself is negative space.
As with all of my owl paintings, the proceeds from the sale of this painting will be donated to the Raptor Center of Minnesota.
