Well, it turns out that the Vista model feeder produced by the Audubon Society is actually a squirrel dispenser (also known as an owl feeder).
How did this happen? Well, it turns out one squirrel figured out how to launch itself from a tree and do a free-fall on to the top of the feeder. From there, it used its back legs to grip the pole and pushed the lid of the feed up so it could crawl in. Despite multiple baffling efforts, this continued until the animal had eaten all of the seeds down to where they are in this picture, thus enticing other squirrels to try to get into the feeder, as well.
No animals were hurt by this experience.
Audubon: all that was required to fix the design flaw was a bungie cord pressing the lid down so that the squirrels can't open it in and roost. HINT, HINT
I feel it is fairly humorous to donate the proceeds of this image to the Raptor Center of Minnesota (yummy squirrels!): https://raptor.umn.edu
