I started painting this one as a simple kestrel (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/American_Kestrel) but it took on a life of its own, turning quickling into something magical and unearthly. Soon, I realized that I had seen this face before at the Egyptian museum - it's Horus! Horus has a very interesting mythos- son (sun!) of Osiris and Isis, defender of the Nile valleys, protectors of pharaohs, official celebration day is the winter solstice, etc. Beyond the interesting battles and eyebrow raising stories, I found it interesting that the sun comes from one eye and the moon from the other, which is what gave rise to this very celestial interpretation of the sun god.
