Growing up in California, monarch butterflies and milkweed were just part of life....until we had a vacation to the coast during the height of the migration period. Everything was draped in layers upon layers upon layers of beautiful monarch butterflies. I mean EVERYTHING. The trees, the cars, the buildings, the fences...everything. Because of the loss of their milkweed habit by urban sprawl throughout the United States, they are becoming an endangered species.
Interestingly, the completely awe-striking sight of the migration swarm, what really sticks in my head is the fact that monarchs migrate from Canada to Mexico and back every year....but a single animal doesn't actually make it all the way. Somehow, it is the grandchildren of the original butterflies that manage to make it one way. And how that happens is still a mystery. Even if you don't like "bugs", you have to be inspired by the pot...
