Time to get geeky with it! One of the coolest parts of science class was learning about absorption and emission spectra...or basically the unique "rainbows" of light that each element will absorb or project/emit in the form of photons. The speed (energy) of the photon determines its color. The slower the photon, the more red it will seem (long wavelengths = top of the rainbow). The faster the photon, the more purple it will seem (short wavelengths = the tight arch of the rainbow). The cool part is finding out that every element has a unique rainbow!
Cool, right?!?
If you're interested in learning more about emission spectra, check out the Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emission_spectrum
Safety note: you need special equipment to view the rainbows. Please do not look directly at the sun or any bright light source. Your retinas will hate you (as they will quickly die a painless but dramatic death).
